Coir workers demand 25 per cent bonus

Staff Reporter

To keep away from August 20 strike

KOCHI: The Kerala Coir Workers’ Union, affiliated to the HMS, has demanded that coir workers in the State should be given 25 per cent bonus before Onam.

Bonus

The president of the union, G. Sugunan, said here that coir workers should not be forced to resort to a strike for their bonus.

He said Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan and Minister for Coir Industry G. Sudhakaran should take steps to see that the coir workers got their bonus.

Poor demand

He alleged that the coir industry in the State was at a standstill largely because of poor demand and the falling price of coir.

The promise that Coirfed would procure coir at a fixed floor price had not been implemented so far, he said.

It was also alleged that the increased wages for coir spinners fixed last year had not been paid fully. The union will not participate in the August 20 general strike, he said.
