Prize catch: Tiger pelts recovered by the police in Bangalore on Monday.
BANGALORE: The city police on Sunday caught three persons for allegedly possessing pelts of a male tiger and a cub in Gandhinagar. The value of the pelts is estimated at Rs. 15 lakh in the illegal wildlife trade, the police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) B. Shivakumar said the accused had brought the pelts from the forest in Tamil Nadu. “The pelts look fresh. The tigers appear to have been killed recently,” he said. The accused were found near Tribhuvan cinema in Gandhinagar.
Venkataswamy (33), a resident of Anchethalli in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu, claims to have brought the pelts from a person in Tamil Nadu. “The pelt of the male tiger indicates that the animal was shot. The cub might have been trapped,” Mr. Shivakumar said. The pelts were packed in a box and brought for M. David Kumar (29) and S. Kodandapani (29), both from Koramangala. “We are trying to find their links in the illegal wildlife trade,” he All the three have been booked for offences under the Wildlife Protection Act.
