Forest Department peahen lays six eggs

Proud parent: The peahen with the six eggs laid by her last week.

PUDUCHERRY: A peahen, which has been housed at the Forest Department, laid six eggs last week. The department now plans to give the eggs to the veterinary college for hatching through artificial means.

According to the officials of Forest Department, the three-and-a-half-years old peahen was at the department for the last six months. The department had got a pair of the birds from the veterinary college.“The incubation period for the eggs is around 28 to 30 days. We are planning to give the eggs to the veterinary college to keep them in the incubator for hatching through artificial means,” said an official .Around five months ago, a surrogate peahen had hatched six chicks. However, four chicks had died of chicken pox and two survived, he added.
