Fusion of styles: From ‘Rhythm,’ a dance and music show held in Kozhikode on Monday night. ‘Rhythm,’ a dance and music show featuring varied styles, offered a different viewing experience for a full house at Tagore Centenary Hall in Kozhikode on Monday night. The show, directed by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, was a smooth blend of traditional and contemporary arts, bringing together the East and the West. “I have attempted in ‘Rhythm’ to show India’s unity in diversity,” says Krishnamoorthy Nearly 60 artistes were featured in the show, which has covered more than 75 stages. Percussion maestro Mattannur Sankarankutty and violinist Attukal Subramaniam were in top form on Monday night. Subramaniam, though, could have done better with his choice of film songs. Vocalist Sudha Ranjith also impressed. The main Bharatanatyam dancer Sanjana, stepping in for the more seasoned Mythili Prakash, is blessed with a pleasing stage presence and her costumes and jewellery were elegant. She did a reasonable job too, though the group dancers went out of sync at times. “That was because many of the regular dancers were not there for the show at Kozhikode,” says Krishnamoorthy. “The show was well received wherever we performed. It was heartening to get the same response here too. The programme kicked off in Europe a year ago. We have also performed in several Asian countries and covered the four Indian metros too.” P.K. Ajith Kumar
