BERHAMPUR: Prabhakar Pathi, a youth of the city was selected to represent the national Sepaktakraw team in the 23rd King’s Cup World Championship to be held in Bangkok. This championship would be held from Aug. 25 to Aug. 30. A Sepaktakraw player from the State would be in the national team to participate in a world championship for the first time, said Chandradhwaja Sahu, the president of the Ganjam district Sepaktakraw Association. The association organised a function on Monday evening to honour Prabhakar. This Malaysian game is slowly picking up in the State. , said secretary , Suresh Padhi. There are now six major Sepaktakraw teams in the city. Prabhakar said he had got interested in the game right from the beginning when it was introduced in the city eight years back. The youth of the city and Ganjam district who are traditionally interested in martial arts have shown knack for this new game. Sepaktakraw is said to be derived from ‘kickboxing’ which is also popular in Malaysia. “This game is a complete exercise of the body as it needs extreme body balance and stamina of the players,” said Prabhakar.
