Spotted deer dies of snakebite at mini zoo

The spotted deer which died of snakebite being taken for post-mortem in Puducherry on Tuesday.

PUDUCHERRY: A five year-old-spotted deer at the mini zoo of the Department of Forests and Wildlife died of snakebite on Tuesday.

Conservator of Forests P. Devaraj said the spotted deer, Axis axis, kept in an enclosure along with 18 other animals of the same species, succumbed to snakebite in the early hours.According to a post-mortem report, there was a fang mark of snakebite on one of the hind legs of the male deer. Kidney, liver and heart damage caused by the snakebite had also been observed.

Subcutaneous bleeding, a symptom of snakebite, was noticed during the post-mortem, Mr. Devaraj said.
