Graduates in Forestry want jobs

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: The Karnataka State Forestry Graduates and Students Association has demanded that the State Government reserve all posts of Range Forest Officer (RFO) and Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) for students of Forestry.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Rathnavarma and Harshavardhan, office-bearers of the association, said two colleges teaching the subject were set up in 1985 at Sirsi and Ponnampet. Over 900 students had completed their B.Sc. course in Forestry so far and not even 100 had been placed in the corresponding department in the State. They said such students studied various aspects of the discipline during their four-year course, while students of other branches such as Agriculture, Sericulture, Horticulture, Fisheries and Veterinary Sciences hardly studied Forestry.

Strong objections

Mr. Harshavardhan said students who had passed Agriculture, Sericulture, Horticulture, Fisheries and Veterinary Sciences were being placed in their respective departments, while Forestry graduates did not get such a privilege. “We do not question the fact that we are not allowed to claim posts in departments such as Agriculture, Sericulture and Horticulture, but we strongly object to students of other disciplines being given reservation in employment in the Department of Forests,” he said adding that posts in the department should be reserved for students of Forestry only.

The National Forest Policy of 1988 had strongly advocated the need for professional qualifications in Forestry with regard to recruitment, he added.
