SANKAGIRI: The foundation stone for the construction of a new bus stand in Sankagiri, a long-cherished dream of people in the town, was laid here on Tuesday. The State government allotted a sum of Rs. 95 lakh for the construction of a spacious bus stand, which would help ease the traffic congestion in the town. Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam, after laying the foundation stone, assured that efforts would be made to construct the bus stand quickly. All the necessary passenger amenities will be created in the new bus stand, he added. Listing out the welfare schemes implemented by the government, the minister said that the government had already added about 6,500 new buses to its fleet. About 3,500 more buses will be purchased. These initiatives were taken up to improve the public transportation facilities in the State. Mr. Arumugam also laid the foundation stone for the construction of new classrooms, laboratories and toilets in Sankagiri Government Girls Higher Secondary School. The buildings will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.54 crore with the financial assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. He also declared open the new town panchayat office building. Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly V.P.Duraisamy pointed out that over 200 buses were passing through Sankagiri every day. The existing bus stand witnesses about 35,000 passengers. The new bus stand will benefit a large number of people in Sankagiri and the surrounding areas. He said that steps were being taken up for the creation of an Auto Nagar as Sankagiri has a number of lorry body building and automobile related units. District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam presided. Senior officials were present. Earlier, the minister distributed free colour televisions in Katheri village.
