Government extends moral support to the strike Unlikely to have a major impact on the State
CHENNAI: The day-long general strike called across the country for Wednesday is unlikely to have a major impact on the State with the government categorically stating that transport will not be affected. The State government has extended moral support to the general strike called by Central trade unions.
A press release issued by Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said all government buses would ply on Wednesday. “We will not stop work.”
In a separate statement, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam trade union, the LPF, said it would not participate in the bandh. While promising moral support, the LPF expressed its inability to take part in the strike.
Its president C. Kuppusamy said the LPF fully endorsed the demands made by the trade unions that had called for the bandh. The demands – which included bringing in a Labour Protection Act for unorganised labour, removing the ban on recruitment at the all India level and filling vacancies, annulling the decision to sell shares of profitable public sector companies and prohibiting provident funds to be invested in the share market – were also the demands of the LPF, he said.
