SCTIMST urged to coordinate research

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Animal Husbandry C.Divakaran has urged the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) to function as a nodal agency for research and development in the health sector in the State.

Launching the joint venture of the SCTIMST and the Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB) for developing de-cellularised animal tissue for cardio-vascular application here on Tuesday, Mr.Divakaran said that the State had all facilities and resources for research in the health sector and it should be put to optimum use.

Doctors, engineers and technocrats tend to shy away from research and prefer to confine themselves to clerical jobs. Government departments too are not keen on research activities. Almost all of them are a failure in taking up such activities. So far, the KLDB has been functioning mainly as a gene bank. Now it will also function as a tissue bank too. The tie-up with the SCTIMST is a prestige for the board, he said.

SCTIMST Director K.Mohandas presided. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M.Vijayakumar delivered the keynote address. KLDB managing director Ani S.Das welcomed.

Mangode Radhakrishnan, K.Raju and V.Surendran Pillai, MLAs, were among those who offered felicitation. KLDB general manager Jose Thomas proposed a vote of thanks.
