dated August 20, 1958: Lebanon situation

General Assembly emergency debate in New York on August 19 said that that the peoples of the Middle East appeared to be caught in the grip of a historic and “long overdue” revolution and that this revolution touched every aspect of the region’s life— political, social, economic, emotional and intellectual. “And the rest of the world is, naturally, profoundly interested in the rights, ideas, aims, tendencies and possible developments of this great revolution”, he said. The Middle East in its international aspects was a “most fit theme for the United Nations’ consideration”, Dr. Malik said.
