dated August 20, 1958: Supremacy of Law

Mr. V. K. Krishna Menon, Union Minister for Defence, inaugurating the Bar Council Lectures, on August 18, at St. Mary's Hall, Madras, emphasised the need for strict adherence by lawyers to their code of conduct particularly because lawyers were a necessary ingredient of a society based on the rule of law. He said that the rule of law is important in a democracy and if it was violated it would be the beginning of the end of our national unity, independence and social and economic progress. How the law might be interpreted by the courts depended on the prevailing social and economic conditions.
