Corrections and clarifications

* * An editing error altered the meaning of a phrase in a report “India, Germany hopeful of NSG clearance in one shot” (August 19, 2008). The third paragraph was “Speaking to The Hindu on the background, a German official said that while several NSG members had questions and concerns about the proposal, Berlin was hopeful that a decision on the proposed exemption for India could be reached during the two days itself.” It should have been “Speaking to The Hindu on background ….” The Special Correspondent was saying his source was speaking to The Hindu in confidence. It was made to appear as if the source was providing the background to the story.

There are several categories of “speaking terms” (agreements concerning attribution) that cover information conveyed in conversations with journalists. The term “On background” means the thrust of the briefing may be reported (and the source characterised in general terms) but direct quotes may not be used.
