PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar had initiated steps to re-rail administration in the Union Territory, leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi in Parliament M. Ramadass said on Tuesday. Shortly after calling on Mr. Gurjar at Raj Nivas, Mr. Ramadass said that during the interaction, the Lt. Governor had also informed him of the steps taken to ensure better law and order situation in the Union Territory. As part of measures to streamline the administration, Mr. Gurjar had been holding department-wise review meetings with Ministers and officers concerned, he said. Mr.Gurjar had also expressed his commitment in creating opportunities for re-railing the administration, he added. On the prevailing power shortage in Puducherry, the Lt. Governor had stressed the need for getting additional supply from the Central Generating Stations and he had also written to the Union Minister for Power in this regard, Mr. Ramadass said. Mr. Gurjar had expressed hope that the Union Territory would get additional electricity to meet its requirement. According to Mr. Ramadass, the need for delegating powers to the local bodies without further delay was stressed during the discussions. The Lt. Governor was surprised over the inordinate delay in decentralisation of powers to the civic bodies in Puducherry though 29 subjects had been brought under the purview of the village panchayats and 18 subjects under the purview of the nagarpalika institutions in States such as Rajasthan. The Lt. Governor had also promised to initiate necessary steps in this regard, Mr. Ramadass said. The Lt. Governor had also promised that the project to construct houses for the tsunami-hit people would be implemented after receiving funds from the Centre. He had also regretted that the project was delayed so long, Mr.Ramadass said. During the discussions, he had stressed the need for the government providing subsidy on diesel so that the burden of the fleet operators was not passed on to the commuters, he said.
