ACB checks welfare hostels, unearths misuse of funds

Maintenance of records found to be improper

Boarders’ strength on holidays being inflated by officers

HYDERABAD: Surprise checks on BC Welfare Boys and Girls hostels at Rayadurgam (Anantapur district), by officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), on Monday indicate that rations were being misused.

The amount granted by the government per head, per day, was being drawn in the name of absentee students.

Suitable action is being initiated against the erring officials, a press release issued by ACB here said.

Irregular practices

The checks were conducted following credible information that officials of the hostels were indulging in ‘irregular’ and ‘corrupt’ practices. Maintenance of records was found to be improper.

Chowdaiah, Welfare Officer, and his staff were inflating the strength of boarders on holidays.

Of the 157 students only 24 were present, as most of them had gone to their villages.

On verification of the provisions and commodities issue register, there was shortage of rice, tuar dal, fried gram, ‘pulihora’ packets, green gram, jeera and semiya.

In the case of girls hostel, B. Rudramma, Welfare Officer and staff were showing students as present even though many of them had left for their villages.

Only 102 of the 201 girls were present. Excess commodities were found following verification of provisions and commodities issue register.
