Substation to be ‘test charged’ today

R. Sairam

MADURAI: The first indoor substation in southern districts to fully utilise underground cables — the ‘Meenakshi Amman Temple substation’ — will be ‘test charged’ on Wednesday.

All the recently installed equipment would be tested to assess its functioning, Chief Engineer (Distribution) of Madurai region, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), K. Balasubramanian, told The Hindu. In an indoor substation, all equipment except power transformers would be housed in a closed room whereas in an outdoor substation, everything would be in an open yard.

The substation, which is coming up near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here, will be formally commissioned, for commercial servicing, at a later date subject to all equipment working properly. This is the first indoor substation of the TNEB, which utilises underground cables for both incoming and outgoing power connections, to be put into operation in the Madurai region.

This region comprises Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Theni and Ramanathapuram districts. And 33 kilo volt power lines have been laid for a stretch of 3 km from Arasaradi to this 8 mega volt ampere-capacity substation.

Boost in voltage

“This substation will give an extra boost in voltage to the service area benefiting 10,000 to 15,000 service connections,” he said. The total cost of the substation was around Rs.5 crore. The TNEB bore the entire cost of the project.

In future, similar type of substations would come in other urban areas. This would do away with the need for overhead cables, said Mr. Balasubramanian.
