Bargain hunting: Customers at the inauguration of Onam Fair at Kairali in Bangalore.
Bangalore: Come Onam and the demand for the mundu along with the gold-bordered Kerala sari goes up, as with the essentials of every festival. In this spirit, Kairali, the outlet of the Kerala Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation on M.G. Road, began its Onam Fair a little in advance, on Monday.
N.A. Haris, Shantinagar MLA, inaugurated the fair.
A 10 per cent discount, which is on till September 11, the day before Onam, is valid on all items. A colourful Krishna character, Kathakali style, rich in colour and texture, is one of the Onam specials. Priced at about Rs. 9,000, it is one of the two pieces available in the store. The classic handloom saris range from Rs. 650 to Rs. 15,000 and come in a variety of styles.
From handicrafts made of sandalwood, and wood to copper and gold, the fair attempts to offer as much authenticity from Kerala that it can.
