VIRUDHUNAGAR: The workload of people working under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) has been reduced by 14.13 per cent and 13.30 per cent in ordinary and hard soil, respectively to become eligible for Rs. 80 daily wage, the Virudhunagar Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, has said. Stating that people had to dig out 2.76 cubic metres of ordinary soil and 1.88 cubic metres of hard soil during 2006-07, he said that now people had to work on only 2.37 cubic metres of ordinary soil and 1.63 cubic metres of hard soil. The workload was the lowest in Tamil Nadu when compared to other States where workers got Rs.80 as wage. Stating that it was not acceptable to demand full wages without achieving their targets, Mr. Chandrasekaran said that the wage was based on work completed. People should not believe the words of “anti-social elements” in this regard and if they had any difficulty in this issue, they should meet the respective Block Development Officer, Project Officer (District Rural Development Agency) or the District Collector. They could register their complaints over phone the numbers of which were printed on their identity cards, the Collector said.
