Ingmar Bergman’s best on show
Special Correspondent
Ingmar Bergman
Bangalore: Here is good news for those who admire Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish master of modern cinema who made films in a career spanning six decades.
Seven films
“Remembering Bergman: A Retrospective”, a festival featuring seven of Bergman’s most acclaimed films, will be held here from August 29 to September 4.
The films, being brought to Bangalore by the Swedish Embassy in collaboration with Palador Pictures, will be screened at Inox on Magrath Road.
It is a six-city festival and will also tour Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune and Mumbai.
The films that will be screened here are: Wild Strawberries, Summer Interlude, Through A Glass Darkly, Winter Light, The Silence, Summer With Monika and The Devil’s Eye.
Existentialist questions
These signature films of Bergman deal with the existentialist questions of relationships, loneliness, faith and mortality.
For example, Wild Strawberries centres on an elderly professor and is a psychological drama analysing the effect of guilt, religion and death on a person. Summer With Monika, on the other hand, follows the trials and tribulations of a relationship between a young couple.
It remains one of the most widely watched of Bergman’s films.
All screenings will begin at 8 p.m.
