Call for transparency in political funding

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called upon the Finance Ministry to enact laws mandating political parties to make public their accounts and donors.

Addressing the 62nd Independence Day celebrations at the Chamber here on Friday, its president S. Rethinavelu said that it would go a long way in cleansing politics from the scourge of bribe. He also reiterated a long-standing demand of the Chamber to bring in the system of proportionate representation. This entailed allotment of a number of seats to a political party in State Legislative Assembly and Parliament in proportion to the vote garnered by it.

He called upon the Centre to expedite the pending economic reforms and disinvestment process. The Government’s stake in any public sector enterprise must not exceed 50 per cent.
