Effluent treatment project wins prize

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is estimated that between 130 litres to 200 litres of water is required for processing one kilogram of fabric in an industrial unit. Since small-scale industries are unable to afford effluent treatment plants, the toxic pollutants obtained after the chemical process are often discharged into the environment, leading to ecological problems.

Providing a long-term solution to this toxic menace is a project developed by Ansari Raashid, Mohammed Faisal Naim and Phadtare P. Vinay, students of Textile Chemistry at D.K.T.E.’s Textile and Engineering Institute, Maharashtra.

Titled ‘Electrolytic Effluent Treatment Plant,’ the prototype was on display at ‘Tech Top 2008,’ an all- India exhibition of Engineering Student Projects which concluded here at the Technopark on Tuesday.

The prototype promises to be a cost-effective “technique for environment protection” by facilitating an internal recycling of wastewater within an industrial plant. The design was adjudged as the best among the selected 22 projects from various parts of the country that were exhibited at the venue. The team members also received a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. The prize-winning project will now receive the incubation facility offered by Technopark to meritorious projects. “We will provide them with the right ambience, initial investment and working space at reduced rent for 22 months,” said K.C. Chandrasekharan Nair, Secretary-cum-Registrar, Technology Business Incubator, Technopark.

K. Radhakrishnan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, gave away the prizes.
