HYDERABAD: Panchayat Raj Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy has asked the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) members to call off their proposed chalo Assembly programme. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he advised them not to fall prey to the statements made by people like MPTC and ZPTC association leader Y. Babu Rajendra Prasad who was “distorting” facts on devolution of powers to Panchayat Raj bodies for protecting “his image”. The government had accepted 15 out of the 39 demands of the local bodies’ members and orders had been issued accordingly. Some of the demands put forth by the members were not practical when it came to their implementation. Zilla Parishad chairmen were replaced as chairmen of the panel heading sand auctions following irregularities that came to light, but the government was allotting funds raised through the auctions in the ratio of 25:25:50 to Zilla Parishads, Panchayats and Mandal Parishads. The Minister said film star Chiranjeevi had proved that he was entering politics with the “ultimate” aim of coming to power, rather than serving the people. This was evident from his claim that people would decide about the constituency from which he would contest in the next elections. Mr. Reddy took objection to Mr. Chiranjeevi’s claims that Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Jyoti Rao Phule were his inspirations claiming that they never hankered for power. “These leaders rendered selfless service to the people, but the film actor has selfish goal of coming to power,” he said evading replies when asked about the frequent use of Mahatma Gandhi’s name by the Congress in its campaign.
