Police to blame for clash: Thirumavalavan

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan on Tuesday said the clash between the cadres of his party and Muslims in Pudupattinam near Kalpakkam would not have gone out of control if the police had taken precautionary measures.

Two days after the clash, Mr. Thirumavalavan held discussions with Muslim leaders of Pudupattinam along with Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) general secretary Hyder Ali. As a damage controlling exercise, he visited Pudupattinam to meet members of the Muslim community. “We want to defeat the designs of the forces that try to blow the issue out of proportion and drive a wedge between Dalits and Muslims,” he told reporters.

He said the dispute could have been resolved if the police had arrived on time.

“They reached the spot very late and prevented VCK cadres from going to Chennai to attend the public meeting. Party cadres from the delta districts were sent back by the police,” he alleged.

“A section in the establishment and the police department does not want Dalits and Muslims to remain united. They have created the trouble,” he said.
