J. Balaji
NEW DELHI: The Centre will provide all possible assistance to the Tamil Nadu government to amicably settle the strike by two lakh powerloom units in Coimbatore district, Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan has said.
Talking to The Hindu here, he said Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy and Coimbatore Collector V. Palanikumar were holding talks with the representatives of the associations of textile manufacturers, owners of the job-working powerloom units and the unions to resolve the wage issue, and the next round of talks would be held in two or three days.
He received a memorandum from the unions seeking the Centre’s intervention to increase the wages. Besides, the owners of the job working powerlooms and an equal number of workers employed in them are on strike from August 16.
The unit owners demand 100 per cent increase in wages for the job work they execute for the textile manufacturers, and the powerloom workers demand a 50 per cent increase in their wages.
