Santhosh, Saranya emerge champions

CHENNAI: Santhosh Kumar and J. Saranya, both of Velammal School emerged the winners in the under-16 boys’ and girls’ sections respectively in the Kilpauk Chess Centre’s state-level children’s tournament held recently.

P.R. Raghavan, Senior General Manager (Personnel), The Hindu, gave away the prizes.

The results: Boys: U-16: 1. Santhosh Kumar (Velammal) 6.5 pts; 2. Muthu Alagappan (Sethu Baskara) 6.5; 3. M. Swaroop 6.5.

U-12: 1. Osama Salim (Velammal) 7.5; 2. G. Akash 7; 3. M. Siddarth 7.

U-10: 1. S. Kumar (Anitha MHSS) 8; 2. Karthikeyan Murali 7; 3. Sai Viswesh (National Public) 7.

U-8: Anirudh Aiyengar (DAV) 8; 2. R. Harikrishnan (Sethu Baskara) 7; 3. R. Dileep Kumar (Union Christian) 6.5.

Girls: U-16: 1. J. Saranya (Velammal) 5; 2. A. Akshaya 4; 3. B. Aarthi 3.5.

U-12: 1. Michelle Catherina (Good Shepherd) 5.5; 2. D. Akshita (St. Joseph’s) 5; 3. G. Aarthi 4.5.

Retains title

St. Joseph’s Engineering College retained the ball badminton title in the Bertram tournaments being conducted by the Loyola College, after it won the last set of matches in the league held on Tuesday. St. Joseph’s thus annexed the Kumararaja of Chettinad Cup.

St. Joseph’s defeated Loyola ‘Whites’ 29-13, 29-23 in the second round and then downed the PSG Arts College, Coimbatore 29-22, 29-28 in the final round to assure itself of the title. PSG took the second place followed by Loyola ‘Whites’ and St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchi.

The Dean of Science, Prof. Sagaraj gave away the prizes.

Other results: PSG College, Coimbatore bt St. Joseph’s, Tiruchi 6-29, 29-28, 29-16; Loyola ‘Whites’ bt St. Joseph’s, Tiruchi 29-15, 29-20. Rotary Olympiad

Rotary International (District 3230) will conduct the Chennai leg of the Rotary Olympiad inter-school athletic meet on August 21, and the inter-district Olympiad on August 22, at ICF Stadium. Students in two age categories, Junior (Std. VII to IX) and Senior (Std. X to XII) from over 250 schools are expected to take part in the Chennai Olympiad.

Four other legs — in Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram and Gummudipundi — have already taken place, and attracted over 7000 participants in total. The top three finishers in each event from each of these centres, as well as from the Chennai leg, will compete in the inter-district Olympiad.
