Committee to probe reports of death at AIIMS

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences on Tuesday set up a special committee to probe reports of the death of 49 children during clinical trials at the hospital.

According to the hospital spokesperson, the five-member committee, headed by Neuro Department head Madhuri Bihari, will submit its report within a week. The Union Health Ministry had directed the hospital authorities on Monday to order a probe into the report which was based on a Right to Information reply provided by the hospital authorities.

The report said that as many as 49 children had died during clinical trials of new medicines at the Institute during the past two and a half years. The hospital authorities, however, maintained that the children were sick and did not die due to any drugs used in the trials.
