NDA to oppose move on SGPC

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The NDA committed itself to lead the struggle against the Centre over Haryana’s proposal to split the apex Sikh religious body, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee by setting up a separate panel in that State.

An official release said the declaration came when the Akali Dal and the BJP leaders reached Sangrur to participate in a function to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the assassination of Akali Dal chief Sant Harchand Singh Longowal.

BJP President Rajnath Singh opposed Haryana’s move to set up a separate body to manage the Sikh shrines. Describing the move as “fraught with dangers,” he said if the Congress did not intervene to scuttle the move, “the NDA would be at the forefront in opposing it.”

Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh said, “The Congress perhaps thinks that its only chance of returning to power lies in reviving the ‘anti-Sikh card’ to deflect attention from its failures in governance. But we would not allow it to sow seeds of communal hatred.”
