Mystery over girl’s suicide deepens

Correspondent

CUTTACK: The suicide episode of a college student here last Monday is getting murkier by the day even as the police are yet to find the motive behind the act by the 22-year-old girl.

It is now alleged that the girl committed suicide because she was subjected to blackmail by some of her acquaintances. Police did not rule out this possibility but added that the investigation is on.

According to a private TV channel, the girl had been upset for the past few days as she was allegedly blackmailed by a youth believed to be her boyfriend. The youth had somehow made a video CD of the girl while both of them were alone in a hotel room.

It is also alleged that copies of the CD found their way into the market close to the girl’s house.

Identity unknown

The identity of the youth who made the CD is not yet known.

Police say that all the usual angles -- love affair, failure in studies, unemployment and disturbances in family -- are being investigated.

“It is a clear case of suicide but the motive behind the extreme step is under investigation”, said Madhupatna police station inspector R. K. Prusty. DCP S. Praveen Kumar when contacted also refused to divulge anything about the progress made in investigation.

“Since the matter is under investigation, I do not want to reveal anything about it now,” said the DCP.

“Moreover, we have not yet found any concrete evidence and it would not be fair to say anything on the basis of hearsay about a girl who is dead,” the DCP added.

It is now being alleged that the youth who made the CD was also close to the girl’s family and he is absconding ever since the girl committed suicide.

As the quality of the video is poor, it is believed that it was recorded on a mobile phone camera.

Police claim that they are trying to collect a copy of the said CD and have already made efforts to ascertain the identities of the persons who are behind it.
