Good response to strike call in Chitradurga

Most business establishments and educational institutions were closed; travellers affected


Strike against failure to control price rise

No untoward incidents reported in Chitradurga, Bellary districts


Chitradurga: The response to the nationwide strike called by various labour unions was total in Chitradurga city on Wednesday.

Most shops, hotels, business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed. However, essential services were not affected. Travellers from outside the city faced inconvenience as buses were stopped on the outskirts for sometime.

The road from Travellers’ Bungalow to Mahatma Gandhi Circle was deserted till noon. Autorickshaws plied as usual.

There were no reports of any untoward incident from any part of the district.The strike was in response to a call by the Communist parties and National Labour Unions’ Joint Action Committee in support of their various demands.

It was also against the “anti-labour” policies of the Union and State governments.

In a press release here on Wednesday, the committee came out strongly against price rise and the Union Government’s “failure” to control it. The spiralling prices of essential commodities had affected the poor hard.

The rise in fuel prices had added to the woes of the people.

The committee urged the Government to increase the salaries of midday meal and gram panchayat workers.

It also sought free housing for construction workers and cut in taxes on petroleum products.

Life affected

Bellary Staff Correspondent reports:

Life was affected in the district on Wednesday following the nationwide protest. The strike was peaceful. In Bellary city, activists of various trade unions took out a procession shouting anti-government slogans. They formed a human chain at Gadagi Chennappa Circle, affecting traffic. Many shops and business establishments, restaurants, educational institutions and offices remained closed. Vehicular traffic was not heavy and buses were off the road. According to reports, processions were taken in Hospet, Sirguppa, Kurgodu and other places in the district.
