PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC) on Wednesday flayed private fleet operators for unilaterally imposing fare hike. In a statement here, vice-president of the party K. Lakshminarayanan said failure on the part of the territorial government to prevent the private bus owners from increasing the fare on their own was condemnable. Referring to reports that the government had issued notices to the fleet operators in this regard, he said the administration had acted belatedly. The PMC would launch an agitation against the fare hike after ascertaining the government’s stand on the issue, he said. Permits were given to the private fleet operators only with a view to promoting facilities for thousands of commuters, including government employees, workers, students and traders, he said, adding that rules on collection of bus fare had also been laid down. However, the fleet operators had abruptly increased the fare without bothering about the difficulties it posed to the commuters, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said.
