BHUBANESWAR: With high hopes that Naveen Patnaik government might concede to most of their demands as elections to Assembly were a few months away, hundreds of demonstrators of different hues assembled here on Wednesday. Despite the Bharat Bandh call given by the Left parties affiliated trade unions, hundreds of people reached the Mahatma Gandhi Marg to coincide with the beginning of monsoon session of State Assembly. Several thousands demonstrators decided not to move out from the capital city if their demands were not met. They were least bothered that the State government cannot make any announcement in view of poll codes for upcoming elections to urban local bodies. They were apparently encouraged by the State government’s recent conceding of demands raised by several associations belonging to doctors, un-aided college teachers, engineers and officers of Orissa Administrative Services. Leading the demonstration “fair” were again teachers. Several teachers working in colleges, which were availing bloc grants from the State government, continued their agitation demanding better payment and full grant. Indifferent attitudeSimilarly, Sanskrit language teachers gathered at Mahatma Gandhi marg demanding more attention to Sanskrit college. They said the language was losing its significance due to indifferent attitude of State government. During the previous Assembly sessions, members of Orissa State Deceased Government Employees Distressed Family Members Rehabilitation Committee also came to the venue and continued to raise slogans. Among others, Retrenched Employees Association, Temporary Employees Association and other groups of government servants put up their tents alongside the road leading to the Assembly premises.
