NDMC, DJB told to provide them with safety equipments NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a series of directions to the Delhi Jal Board and the New Delhi Municipal Council aimed at improving the working, safety and health condition of sewerage workers in the Capital. Issuing the directions on a public interest litigation by non-governmental organisation National Campaign for Dignity and Rights of Sewerage and Allied Workers, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar directed the two public bodies to ensure examination and treatment of their own or contract sewerage workers in case of them suffering from any occupational diseases or injuries till they were cured. The Bench directed them to provide these workers with safety equipment and make arrangements for first-aid and crèches at their offices. It directed them to provide these workers all statutory benefits alike provident fund, gratuity and bonus. The Bench further directed the two to pay an ex-gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to these workers, whether working directly under them or under their contractors, immediately in case of death during work. The Bench said that the DJB and the NDMC could recover the money spent on the welfare and care of contract workers from their contractors as per the law. The Court also directed the two to order an inquiry into the death of some sewerage workers during work last year. It also constituted a committee under a retired Chief Secretary of the Tripura Government to ensure compliance of the Court directions. The DJB in its report to the Court had informed that as many as 36 sewerage workers had died due to work related diseases and injuries between 2002 and July 2008.
