Hyderabad
Voicing concern: Yerrannaidu (TDP), K. Narayana, (CPI) and Nayani Narasimha Reddy (TRS) leading a rally in Hyderabad on Wednesday. - HYDERABAD: The nation-wide general strike on Wednesday paralysed services in the government, public and private sector organisations across the State as innumerable number of workers owing allegiance to various trade unions, took part. The strike, however, did not affect operations in the AP State Road Transport Corporation where the recognised – APSRTC Mazdoor Union – not only rejected the strike call but asked its members to perform ‘double’ duty to foil the call with the incentive of overtime wages for the services rendered. The strike, however, was a big success in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, according to V.V. Rama Rao, president of the State Council of All-India Trade Union Congress. He said cargo operations were completely disrupted in the port. A huge procession was taken out by workers. Transactions at the banks and insurance companies were badly affected as the clerical staff went on strike and officers expressed support to the agitation on the ground that the demands raised by the trade unions concerned all sections of working class. The State government staff attended duties wearing black badges. The government had threatened to deduct a day’s wage and initiate action against staff if they took part in the strike. However, the impact of the strike was felt in several Central government organisations. Most of the staff in Post-Offices and Railway Mail Service units did not work. Rally in capitalThe workers participated in a rally in the State capital organised by various political parties. Holding banners and placards, they went in a procession from Ramnagar to Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram. The Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerran Naidu told the meeting that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government went back on its resolve to provide Constitutional backing to the rights of working class, he said. CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu, CPI State secretary K. Narayana and representatives of TRS, Lok Satta, Bahujan Samaj Party, Majlees Bachao Tehreek, Mana Party and Janata Dal (Secular) addressed the rally.
