Once installed, the new interlocking system would be the largest in India Many trains to be cancelled or to be terminated short of destination or will be diverted NEW DELHI: In order to enhance train operational facilities at the New Delhi railway station, Northern Railway will be carrying re-modelling work at the station this September. For this purpose, the station would remain non-interlocked from September 6 to 14 and movement of trains during that period would be handled manually. Also, keeping in view the work, 62 trains would remain cancelled, 126 trains would be terminated short of destination and 50 trains would be diverted to run on alternative route for the period from September 5 to September 15. The remodelling work involves installation of the new route relay interlocking on 1,278 routes and according to Northern Railway once installed, the new interlocking system would be the largest in India. It would replace the existing British system of route relay interlocking on 690 routes. There would be additions and alternations on 125 routes in the Old Delhi railway station as well. Platform handling workAccording to Northern Railway officials, there would be 33 per cent increase in platform handling work at the New Delhi railway station after the remodelling work. Northern Railway spokesperson Rajeev Saxena said: “The bottleneck in the Sadar area would be removed and there would be six lines in place of existing three at Sadar Bazar end of the New Delhi station making independent corridor for reception and dispatch of trains to and from Old Delhi, Kishanganj, Subzi Mandi and Sarai Rohilla stations.” “Two additional lines on Tilak Bridge end would be connected with the New Delhi station yard resulting in a total of six lines between New Delhi and Tilak Bridge in place of four. In addition four platforms would also be added at the New Delhi railway station to the existing 12 platforms,” he added.
