Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the State government justified the hike in purchase price of wind power last week from Rs. 2.70 to 3.50 a unit, on the grounds that it was necessary to promote wind sector.
Participating in the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas (Renewable Energy Day) celebrations here on Wednesday, Dr. Reddy stressed the need for reducing energy consumption and promoting renewable energy sources. Renewable energy was the only alternative to thermal power which faced the danger of depleting coal reserves.
He said power was an essential part of livelihood.
The development of regions was measured in terms of per capita power consumption. Surplus power boosted employment generation. Energy Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir said the State government proposed to enhance the installed generation capacity of wind power from 700 to 2,000 MW.
Finance Minister K. Rosaiah also spoke.
