CHENNAI: TNCC president K.V. Thankgabalu on Wednesday called upon Congressmen to work towards fulfilling the aspirations of Rajiv Gandhi by bringing back the Congress rule in Tamil Nadu.

“While addressing a meeting here he spoke about establishing the Congress rule in Tamil Nadu. We have to take a pledge to realise his aspirations,” Mr. Thankgabalu said at a meeting organised in connection with the 65th birth anniversary celebrations of the late leader in Chennai.

He rejected the criticism that the Congress was not a cadre-based party and lacked people’s support saying that the cadres assembled in large numbers at Kamarajar Arangam had disproved the critics.

“Today, 72 per cent of the population belong to the age group of 17 and 35. Let us mobilise the youth power,” he added. Mr. Thankgabalu said if India had made strides in the field of information technology, the credit should go to the farsighted initiatives of Rajiv Gandhi.

AICC member Karti Chidambaram said the Congress failed to capture power in the State because it did not take up the people’s issue.

“Even Rajiv Gandhi was not able to ensure that the Congress was elected to power in the State because it could not function as a political party. It was used as a vote bank by others and after the elections it was not given its due,” he said. Earlier, a 65-kg cake was cut to mark the birth anniversary.

AICC secretary K.P. Krishnamurthy, Congress Legislature Party leader D. Sudarssanam, former TNCC presidents M. Krishnasswamy and Kumari Ananthan and other senior leaders participated in the meeting.
