Honour: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa presenting the D. Devaraj Urs Award to the former Chief Justice T Venkataswamy, at the 93rd birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister in Bangalore on Wednesday. BANGALORE: Chairman of the Second Backward Classes’ Commission T. Venkataswamy was on Wednesday honoured with the D. Devaraj Urs State-level Award for 2008-09 in recognition of his services towards the cause of social justice. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, was presented to the 85-year-old legal expert by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa at a function organised here to mark the 93rd birth anniversary celebrations of the former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs, who is known for espousing the cause of social justice through land reforms. The division-level Urs awards were also presented on the occasion to one person each from the four revenue divisions of the State. S. Bheemappa (Bangalore Division), Sultan Shahid Educational Trust (Mysore), K. . Methri (Gulbarga) and Kalidasa Educational Institution were honoured with division-level awards which carry a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each. Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa, who presented the awards, described Urs as champion of backward classes’ cause. He noted that the land reforms, introduced by the former Chief Minister, played a key role in ensuring social justice. He said Urs could implement such revolutionary reforms as he had strong commitment as well as political will. Social Welfare Minister D. Sudhakar, Minorities’ Welfare Minister Dr. Mumtaz Ali Khan and Social Welfare Department Secretary Bharatlal Meena were among those present. The Chief Minister also inaugurated Devaraj Urs Bhavan built in memory of the former Chief Minister located on Miller’s Road. This would function as an office complex housing offices of the Department of Backward Classes Development and various agencies coming under the Department. Devaraj Urs Research Institute, presently functioning from a rented building, would be shifted to the Devaraj Urs Bhavan, Chandramma, Director of the Institute, told The Hindu.
