Save energy, says Collector

Staff Reporter

ARIYALUR: Declining stock of coal and petroleum resources will be the basis for innovations by the future generation for power generation through alternative sources to sustain economic development, Collector R. Sudalaikannan said on Wednesday.

Addressing a function held at the Nirmala Girls’ Higher Secondary School to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day, Mr. Sudalaikannan urged the gathering of students to make saving of energy through judicious use a movement.

It was vital for the student community to understand the current power crisis and the imperative need to generate energy through alternative methods, he said.

In the coming years, the need for power would only increase. If the power requirement was not met, there would be an economic decline, he cautioned, adding that energy conservation should begin at home.

The Collector handed over prizes and certificates to school and college students who had excelled in essay, oratory and drawing competitions held in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day, and flagged off a rally that was taken out from the school to the Anna Statue.

Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency Venkatachalam, Superintendent of Police D. Krishnamoorthy and representatives of local bodies also addressed the students.

Earlier in the day, the Collector administered a pledge of communal harmony to mark the birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Senior officials including Mahalir Thittam Project Officer A. Pandian; P.A. General to Collector, P. Manimaran, and staff of Revenue, Information and Public Relations, Rural Development, Adi Dravida Welfare, and Backward Class Welfare departments took the pledge.
