New Himachal DGP to launch special drive against narcotics

Shimla: Launching a special drive against narcotics trade and strengthening border posts at Chamba to prevent infiltration of terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir are among the top priorities of the new Himachal Pradesh police chief Gurpreet Singh Gill.

The 1974 batch IPS officer, who took charge on Wednesday after Ashwani Kumar was appointed CBI chief, told reporters that a month-long special drive would be launched against narcotics trade in Mandi, Kullu and Dharamsala districts notorious for preparation of cannabis from poppy.

ADG CID D.S. Manhas, who was also present, said special teams have been constituted under an Inspector rank officer to launch the special drive next month as poppy crops are harvested in September.

Strict vigil on foreigners

Mr. Gill, who was ADG BSF at Chandigarh, before taking over his new assignment, said strict vigilance would be kept on foreigners indulging in the narcotics trade.

Anticipating possibilities of terrorists sneaking into the State from J&K through Chamba border to escape operation against them in Kashmir, he said security personnel on the border posts would be put on extra vigil.

Referring to a spate in road accidents, he said the problem could be reduced by widening roads and putting more safeguards at places prone to mishaps in the hilly areas.

The new police chief announced zero tolerance to corruption among policemen.

Mr. Gill said the Himachal Pradesh police would work in coordination with police in neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana to help people in times of need like the recent stampede in Naina Devi temple in which 145 people died. — PTI
