THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Train services in the State were thrown out of gear on Wednesday on account of the picketing of railway stations by the supporters of the 24-hour nation-wide strike called by trade unions. The Chennai-bound Guruvayur-Chennai Egmore Express (Train number 6128), which arrived at Thiruvananthapuram central station at 3.45 a.m. from Guruvayur, was the first train to get stranded. Railway authorities were taken by surprise as the agitators sat on the track and prevented the movement of the train. It finally left by around 7 a.m. The Shornur-bound Venad Express (6302) had to wind up the service at Ernakulam in view of the picketing. However, the Ernakulam-bound Janashatabdi Express (2076) was able to reach its destination. The picketing, which commenced at the central station, Parassala, Varkala, and Ernakulam stations, was extended to other stations. The agitators picketed as many as 11 stations under the Thiruvananthapuram division. Some of the trains that commenced journey ran one to two hours late. Railway sources said large-scale picketing by the agitators and intimidation of Railway personnel affected the train services.
