IN GRIEF: Ivory Coast football player Attebi Djawrey Abale Albert Auguste’s brother Eben (second from left) at the Victorial Hospital mortuary when they came to receive Attebi’s body in Bangalore on Wednesday. BANGALORE: A 26-year-old BCA student from Ivory Coast died while playing a university inter-collegiate football match here Wednesday morning. Abeti, studying in fifth semester of BCA, was playing for Reddy Jana Sangha College, Koramangala, at the Central College grounds. They were playing against Government First Grade College, Kolar. “He fell down on his chest while trying to get the ball,” said the coach of the college team. Abeti collapsed and was taken to St. Martha’s Hospital. On hearing the news, Abeti’s brother, who also studies in the same college, rushed to the hospital and took the body with the help of others to Victoria Hospital for the autopsy. ProcedureHowever, this caused problems as they had not completed the formalities at St. Martha’s nor had they informed the jurisdictional Upparpet police. This led to delay in conducting the autopsy. A distraught friend, who was not wanted to be named, said, “We do not know any such procedure. All we want to do is to take the body as quickly as possible.” Abeti’s brother was not willing to talk. The college authorities then stepped in to help and finally the body was handed over in the evening. Second incidentThis is the second instance of a foreigner dying during a football game in Bangalore. In December 2004, Cristiano Junior of Brazil died in the finals of the 26th edition of Federation Cup Football Tournament at the Kanteerava Stadium. Cristiano Junior, who played for Goa’s Dempo Sports Club, collapsed just after scoring a goal against Mohun Bagan.
