Blessing in disguise: Employees of the KSRTC washing buses at the Ernakulam depot on Wednesday.

KOCHI: The staff of the Ernakulam unit of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation set an example for others on Wednesday by participating in the national general strike, but in a different manner.

Thirty-eight employees of the KSRTC unit here marked the strike day by washing the buses parked in the station. Staff cutting across different categories joined in the process and at the end of the day, they cleaned up nearly half of the 80 buses parked here.

According to Joseph Stanley, control inspector, KSRTC, this showed the commitment the employees have for the organisation.

The Ernakulam unit of the KSRTC has been performing well, as it registered the highest collection in the past three days. While the average daily collection of the unit has been Rs. 5.10 lakh, the collections made on Tuesday was a record Rs. 6.94 lakh. The collection on Sunday was Rs. 6.10 lakh and that on Monday Rs. 6.15 lakh, said Mr. Stanley said, citing official records.

Even though the unit has, on record, 73 schedules using 80 buses, only 67 services are operated daily from here. Some of the trips like circular city services have been cancelled due to low collection.

The unit has 543 permanent employees and 140 temporary employees.
