THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded here on Wednesday that the government should hold consultations with all concerned before recommending special economic zones in the State. Party spokesman M.S. Kumar told journalists that the party was against evictions and conversion of agriculture land in Kerala for establishment of special economic zones, considering the density of population in the State. Besides, the applicants for special economic zones from the State were real estate developers. This did not augur well for industrial development. Mr. Kumar said that the party wanted the State government to withdraw the surcharge imposed on power consumption above 80 units. The spokesman said that the party would launch a stir from Thursday against the hefty scholarships proposed to be granted to Muslim and converted Christian students. Such benefits were being denied to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. While 5,000 Muslim girls would be granted a scholarship of Rs.14,000 a year, the stipend for SCs and STs was only Rs.240. He demanded that an enquiry be instituted into the links of people’s representatives with extremist organisations such as the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
