Smoke triggers panic

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Panic gripped passengers when smoke emanated from the running Venkatadri Express on Wednesday night.

The train departed from Kacheguda railway station at 8.30 p.m. Minutes before reaching Umdanagar thick smoke emanated from the rail engine, engulfing three coaches. “On noticing the smoke, authorities halted the train at Umdanagar. Scared passengers jumped out of the train,” said a passenger.

Railway authorities maintained that it was a minor hitch in the engine that led to emission of smoke. “Friction in the brake liners probably led to smoke and sparks. We got the problem rectified within minutes and made a thorough check of the engine,” said a SCR spokesman.
