R. Nallakannu VILLUPURAM: Senior leader of the Communist Party of India R. Nallakannu has called for an inquiry into the Rettanai incident by a sitting judge because the issue has wider ramifications at the national level. After visiting Rettanai, Mr. Nallakannu told The Hindu that it was concerned with the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and lapses in the payment of daily wages of Rs. 80. Instituting a probe by Revenue Divisional Officer would not serve the purpose. Since, revenue officials and police officers were involved in the episode it would be tantamount to conducting only a departmental enquiry. Whereas, the issue had various other dimensions such as providing jobs, creating rural assets, and so on. But in its implementation many anomalies had come to light. The wages started with Rs. 80 a day gradually tapered to Rs. 70, Rs. 60 and as in the case of Rettani, it had come down to Rs. 40 a day, just 50 per cent of the promised wage.
