Inspector files counter-affidavit in Raja case

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Perundurai police Inspector on Wednesday submitted before the Madras High Court that investigation did not disclose that the former Handlooms Minister, N.K.K.P. Raja, had invited two persons for a panchayat in connection with a land dispute.

In the counter-affidavit filed by the Additional Public Prosecutor, P. Kumaresan, to a habeas corpus petition (HCP) in which Mr.Raja had been cited as a respondent, the Inspector, Vetrivendhan, said investigation did not disclose any panchayat having been conducted on July 22 as alleged in the affidavit.

The allegation that five private respondents forced the detenus to attend a panchayat in the presence of the former Minister was not correct.

The matter related to a petition by one N.Elangovan of Perundurai taluk in Erode district seeking a direction to the police to produce his father-in-law, P.C.Palanisamy and mother-in-law, P.Malarvizhi and brother-in-law, P.Sivabalan and set them at liberty. All the three were present in the court on a later date. The police said investigation did not reveal that Mr.Raja invited Mr.Palanisamy and his brother Gugamani for a panchayat.

As regards another HCP filed by N.Subramani, seeking the production of Mr.Gugamani and setting him at liberty, the Inspector submitted that a special team had been constituted to trace the detenu.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Prabha Sridevan and V.Periyakaruppiah, directed the police to file the additional status report of the investigation conducted.
