YOUNG TALENT: E. Prabhakaran and Sivananda Seshadri, who won the Betram Memorial table tennis doubles title. CHENNAI: E. Prabhakaran clinched a double in the men’s table tennis event of the Bertram tournament at Loyola College, here on Wednesday. The 17-year-old I year B.Com student of Loyola College defeated collegemate Sivananda Seshadri 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8 in the singles final for The Father Principal’s Cup. Earlier, partnering Sivananda, Prabhakaran beat the SSN College of Engineering pair of R.S. Raja and T. Raghuram 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 to win the doubles title and lift The Krishnaswamy Iyer Cup. The singles clash between the No.1 player in the State, Sivananda and Prabhakaran was absorbing. The two played both offence and defence exceedingly well. Of the two, Prabhkaran turned out to be more athletic. His retrieving skills away from the table were top stuff. Though Sivananda fought back after losing the first two games by pocketing the third, he couldn’t dictate the pace of the rallies unable as he was to counter the defensive skills displayed by Prabhakaran. Fr. Susai, Vice-Principal, Loyola College, gave away the prizes. While tennis first round matches were washed out due to rain, chess got underway on Wednesday. Defending champion Panimalar had a fine start in the men’s volleyball first round with a 25-12, 25-15 win over A.M. Jain. Government’s gestureAs a platinum sponsor, the State Government, on Tuesday, contributed Rs. 1 crore for the Chennai Open ATP tennis championship to be held at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium here from January 5 to 11. Also, a sum of Rs. 2.5 crores will be given as an interest-free loan to meet out the Chennai Open preliminary expenses. T.P.M. Moideen Khan, Sports and Environment Minister, on Tuesday, presented the contribution of Rs. 1 crore to the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association in the presence of M.R. Mohan, Member Secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Joshi, Secretary, TNTA, accepted the cheque on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association. Easy for ChinmayaNamay Kedia grabbed three wickets as Chinmaya dismissed St. Mary’s ‘B’ for 55 on way to a nine-wicket win in the TNCA u-14 Schools tournament. The scores: St. Mary’s ‘B’ 55 in 21.4 overs (Namay Kedia three for 15) lost to Chinmaya Vidyalaya 58 for one in 11.2 overs (R. Rajath 37 n.o.); Jawahar Vidyalaya SSS ‘B’ 65 in 24.5 overs lost to Devi Academy SSS 66 for no loss in 11 overs.
