Police claim to have seized firearms and stolen cars

The police also found beacon light and an Indian flag

NEW DELHI: Four men allegedly involved in cases of robbery have been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police at Rohini here on Sunday. The police claim to have seized four sophisticated pistols, a country-made firearm, live cartridges, four stolen luxury cars and Rs.17.40 lakh in cash from them.

Sub-Inspector Pramod Kumar of the Special Cell received a tip-off that some members of Sunil Sansi gang would come to Baljeet Nagar to meet their accomplice Deshraj.

The police raided the house but the suspects had left the place in a car leaving behind another vehicle there. The team waited for the suspects to return, but they did not turn up. The vehicle was seized and a hunt launched for the culprits.

On Sunday, Head Constables Satender and Shivbir spotted the vehicle in which they suspects were travelling and informed their seniors. A team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravi Shankar trailed the vehicle for over 3 km after which its driver had to apply the brakes as it hit a dead end. The occupants of the car then whipped out firearms and opened fire at the police party. However, they were overpowered in the fields of Rohini Sector-24.

The accused were identified as Sunil Kumar, Amarjeet Singh, Rajiv Kumar and Deshraj.

The vehicle was found stolen from Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The police also found beacon light and an Indian flag. During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to having committed robberies in Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh using stolen vehicles.

According to the police, Sunil had escaped from police custody while being brought to a Karkardooma court here by the U.P. police in April. He was arrested in the Capital in 2007 for allegedly smuggling drugs. Amarjeet purportedly disclosed that he was into vehicle thefts in Punjab and was first arrested in 1994.

In late 1990s, he shifted base to Delhi and in due course came across Sunil. Deshraj was Sunil’s neighbour and they initially used to supply illicit liquor, the police said. Rajiv was arrested for his alleged involvement in his father’s murder. All the accused are school dropouts.

After escaping from police custody, Sunil reorganised his gang and allegedly committed a spate of robberies. In May 2008, the criminals intercepted a bank van carrying Rs.37 lakh in cash at Amritsar, fired and injured a security guard and fled with the van. In July, the gang members allegedly robbed a money changer in Karol Bagh of Rs.1 lakh and 1,000 dollars.

They robbed some men of over Rs.14 lakh belonging to a liquor merchant on August 11.
