Up in arms: Airport Authority Employees Union protesting outside the domestic departure terminal at the IGI Airport in New Delhi on Wednesday. NEW DELHI: Operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here remained largely unaffected on Wednesday by the 12-hour-long strike call given by the Airports Authority Employees’ Union. However, all flights from Delhi to Guwahati and Kolkata had to be cancelled as the operations at these two airports were severely impacted by the strike. The AAEU had called a nationwide strike to press for fulfilment of their demands pending with the management of the Airports Authority of India. The stir was in support of the country-wide general strike call given by the Committee of Public Sector Trade Unions. “As many as 14 departures and 11 arrivals of flights got cancelled at the IGI airport on Wednesday. Most of them were either scheduled to come from or go to Kolkata,” airport sources said. Delhi International Airport Limited, which is managing the Delhi airport, said it had put a back-up plan in place to minimise any impact on airport operations and reduce inconvenience caused to passengers. A number of airport employees staged a demonstration and carried out a protest march at the IGI Airport. The AAEU has demanded that there should be no further privatisation or leasing out of other AAI airports in the country.
