Caring for differently-abled, the filmi way

The award ceremony of a special international film festival dedicated to the differently-abled was held at India International Centre in the Capital on Thursday.

Organised by United Nations Information Centre and non-government organisation Brotherhood, “We Care Film Fest-2008” intends to bridge the widening gap between physically challenged children and other students in schools through orientatio n, interaction and association model.

Brotherhood’s Satish Kapoor, who has been organising the annual international festival of films relating to disability for the past few years, said: “While browsing newspapers in 2002 I realised that they mostly highlight issues concerning women’s rights, wildlife and environment issues. As I had been working with the disabled in schools, I wanted to start a film festival on people with special needs. After speaking to journalist K. Kannan, I got in touch with actor Nandita Das, who is one of the co-founders.”

Asserting that filmmakers were even more sensitive to counsellors working with differently-abled children, Satish said noted lyricist-cum-director Gulzar explained to him how he made “Koshish” that starred Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan. “The movie depicted the struggle of a deaf and mute couple in a desensitised society. So the festival intends to bridge the gap between filmmakers and non-government organisations.”

Forty-eight films entered in four categories at the festival from Philippines, China, Israel and the host country. A total of three films were selected by the jury in four categories of up to 1 minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes.

The festival was held online in February. The awards were given away by eminent danseuse Sonal Mansingh. Two sets of six DVDs containing the award-winning films were released on the occasion. The event included the launch of the first-ever website where one can see the entries received from all over the world.
